Sesame Beef Lettuce Wraps

This unique and flavourful dish, known as bulgogi, consists of thinly sliced barbecued marinated beef and vegetables wrapped in a crisp lettuce leaf. This Korean favourite is quickly gaining popularity in North America and can be found in some contemporary restaurants. In fact, Oz Kafe on Elgin Street offers their version of the dish which they call “Seoul Food”.

Sesame Beef Lettuce Wraps (Bulgogi)
2 flank steaks, 400-500g each, thinly sliced
2 small yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 head Boston lettuce 

1/2 cup soy sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp Sriracha sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp grated ginger
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp sesame
seeds

Begin by making the marinade my combining the soy sauce, brown sugar, sriracha sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, lemon juice and sesame seed in a medium bowl. Slice the beef very thinly, and add to the marinade. Let stand for up to an hour.

Next, heat 1 tbsp of oil in a wok and saute the pepper and onions until soft. Remove and set aside. Next, fry the beef, stirring frequently for 3-4 minutes until cooked.

As an option, include side of rice and steamed edamame beans. Wrap beef and vegetables in individual lettuce leaves. For extra spice, top wraps with extra sriracha sauce.
